The Sacramento State softball team surged to its sixth-straight win after sweeping a doubleheader against University of Pacific Friday. The Hornets squeaked by with a 3-2 win in the first match-up, then cruised to a 7-4 victory in the afternoon game.

The Hornets trailed for only half an inning in the first game, answering the Tigers’ first-inning run by putting up two in the bottom of the frame. Junior Rachel Miles put the Hornets on the board with a one-out, two-RBI double.

Sac State added another run in the fifth, which proved to be crucial as Pacific scored again in the sixth to pull within a run of the Hornets. Sophomore Brittani Clifford entered the game in the seventh and pitched a perfect inning to record her fifth save of the season.

In the second match-up Sac State also trailed entering the bottom of the first after Pacific scored twice to start the game. The Hornets answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Miles singled home a run in the inning and freshman Megan Schaefer contributed two RBIs with a two-out base hit.

Pacific would grab the lead once more with two runs in the second frame, but Sac State responded by pulling ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Hornets tacked on one more run in the sixth to win by the final score of 7-4.

Clifford got the win in the second game, pitching six relief innings and allowing only two runs while striking out six.

The Hornets’ next game will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday on the road against the Spartans of San Jose State.
